ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Claude… Generative AI tools have disrupted the development world in just a few months. Today, anyone can generate functional code in seconds. So why hire a specialized provider? And more importantly, why choose one that's geographically close?

Because code was never the real issue. The real issue is understanding your needs.

AI generates code, not understanding

AI tools are remarkable at producing code from clear instructions. But in the reality of a mobile or web application project, instructions are never clear from the start. Needs are implicit, contradictory, and evolving. A client knows what they want to achieve, but rarely how to translate it into technical specifications.

This is precisely where human expertise comes in. Understanding business challenges, identifying unspoken constraints, anticipating use cases the client hasn't imagined yet — all of this requires active listening, field knowledge, and a trusting relationship that cannot be built from behind a screen.

In-person meetings: a strategic choice, not a whim

At ECASTE, Emmanuel Castellani systematically favors an in-person first meeting for every new project. This is neither tradition nor a sales ritual: it's a strategic approach that determines the project's success.

Face-to-face, you pick up what a video call doesn't convey: hesitations, glances between colleagues when a sensitive topic comes up, enthusiasm for one feature over another. These subtle signals allow needs to be qualified with a precision that no written specification can achieve.

This first meeting also allows for upstream strategic recommendations: should we go native or cross-platform? Is the functional scope realistic for the planned budget? Are there technical constraints related to the client's existing ecosystem? All questions that deserve to be addressed before the first line of code, not after.

The all-virtual paradox

Since the pandemic, remote work and video meetings have become the norm. And in many cases, this works perfectly well for day-to-day project management. But this ease of virtual communication has created a paradox: the more exchanges become dematerialized, the more misunderstandings accumulate.

A brief by email. A hastily written specification. A 30-minute call to validate a complex functional scope. And a few weeks later, the delivery doesn't match expectations. Not because the developer coded poorly, but because the need was never properly understood.

We regularly see this scenario with clients who come to us after an unfortunate first experience with a remote provider. The code is there, the application runs, but it doesn't address the real need.

Proximity in service of responsiveness

Being based in Sophia-Antipolis and working across Nice, Antibes, Cannes, Mougins, and Monaco allows us to offer responsiveness that remote providers simply cannot match:

  • In-person scoping meetings to lay the project's foundations on solid ground
  • Co-design workshops where we draw user journeys together, whiteboard in hand
  • Live demonstrations of prototypes and intermediate versions, with immediate feedback
  • Availability for emergencies: when a critical production bug occurs, being able to meet within the hour changes everything

This proximity doesn't replace digital tools — we obviously use Slack, Git, Jira, and video conferencing daily. It complements them where they show their limits.

AI as a tool, humans as strategists

At ECASTE, we use AI daily in our development processes. It helps us accelerate certain tasks, explore technical solutions, and generate boilerplate code. But we don't confuse the tool with the strategy.

AI doesn't know that a healthcare client has specific GDPR constraints. It doesn't know that the field team uses tablets in dead zones without internet. It doesn't know that the sales director absolutely wants a feature the CTO considers secondary. These human trade-offs require presence, listening, and experience.

After 16 years of custom development and over 50 applications delivered, we know that a successful project is 20% code and 80% understanding the need. And that understanding always starts with a handshake.
