The question of choosing between native and cross-platform development comes up regularly in our discussions with clients. Here is our analysis based on over 16 years of experience.
Performance, the number one argument
Native applications (Swift for iOS, Kotlin for Android) directly access the operating system's APIs. There is no intermediate abstraction layer, resulting in significantly superior performance, particularly for animations and data processing.
User experience faithful to guidelines
Each platform has its own design guidelines (Human Interface Guidelines at Apple, Material Design at Google). A native application can perfectly follow these conventions, offering an experience consistent with the user's ecosystem.
Full access to hardware features
Certain advanced features (Face ID, ARKit, Core ML, NFC, etc.) are only optimally accessible via the native SDK. Cross-platform solutions often lag behind in the implementation of these features.
Long-term maintenance
A native application is simpler to maintain over time. Operating system updates are immediately supported, without having to wait for a third-party framework to integrate them.
When to choose cross-platform?
Cross-platform (React Native, Flutter) can be a good choice for simple applications with a limited budget or very tight deadlines. ECASTE is capable of developing in both approaches and will advise you according to your constraints.
